What Our Pupils and Parents Think

"I just wanted to thank you for your help during my time in hospital… I believe without your help, I would have found it hard to get where I did in my final GCSE results."

Letter from pupil

“When I was in hospital, Ben came to visit me every day and we discussed my favourite subject RS. We discussed the Holocaust and made things together.

This helped me take my mind off my injury and made the day pass more quickly.”

Quote from pupil

"Thanks so much for making my daughter’s time in hospital so much more enjoyable. She loved doing school and has some very happy memories."

Letter from parent

James Brindley School is based on children’s ward 11 at the Royal Orthopedic Hospital and caters for 12 pupils. Depending on the cohort at any one time Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) right through to Key Stage 5 will be delivered at the pupils’ bedsides.

Teaching of all school age children takes place on the ward by a secondary trained teacher confident in the delivery of a wide range of subjects across different key stages. A specialist primary trained teacher is also based on the ward two days a week. We liaise with home schools during a pupil’s stay in hospital and upon discharge, so that pupils can continue with their current education pathway.

All of the young people are offered lessons by James Brindley. This may be to offer support in an area of study they might find difficult, as well as providing work for lessons they enjoy and would like to further their knowledge and expertise. Lessons take place at the bedside mainly on a one-to-one basis, though families are always welcome to join in! As well as promoting a learning experience, pupils often find our school work a welcome interruption from the medical environment.

Our School History

James Brindley school administration centre Birmingham .

We teach across 11 sites including teaching centres and hospitals in Birmingham. We also provide support for children finding it difficult to access education outside of the home, due to both physical or mental health related reasons. We find children and young people respond best when they feel comfortable in their surroundings, which is why staff work hard to ensure that every pupil in our care receives the best possible education in a safe, stimulating and supportive environment.
